I don't know about you, but assessing and grading writing used to be a struggle for me. I tried several methods, but none of them seemed very fair, including the methods of some of my colleagues. However, once I tried assessing with a rubric, I knew I'd found the best
method for my students. I created a rubric (which I frequently change slightly to meet the specifics of each assignment). I always, always discuss the rubric with the students before I give the assignment so they understand how their sentences will be graded. Students will appreciate knowing ahead of time what is expected to receive a good grade. It may even be a good idea to send a copy home so parents understand how their child will be assessed.
After the students turn in their assignment, I make a copy of the rubric for each student and attach it to their sentences as I grade them. I simply circle one number for each category and then calculate final scores by totaling the points circled and dividing that by the total possible. You can calculate the final score with a calculator or you can use Roobrix.com.
Happy grading! ;)
